Lily Borer

The large, yellow and black striped caterpillars (worms) of the lily borer (40 mm in size) are much easier recognised than its brown moths. These caterpillars can be found on a wide variety of bulbous plants including Amaryllis, Clivia and other indigenous lilies, during the months September to April.

These borers tunnel between the upper and lower epidermis of the leaves and are therefore protected from most chemical control agents and birds. Lily borers are particularly damaging when they tunnel down the leaves and into the bulbs of plants, resulting in secondary rotting and loss of the entire plant.
